At VOUS Church, we’ve always believed that leadership is more than a title or a position–it’s a calling to serve with purpose. Every month, our staff and key team gather for a staff meeting designed to inspire, equip, and refresh us. It’s a rhythm that keeps us aligned with our vision and mission as a church.
These moments are sacred. We spend time in worship, celebrate monthly wins, lift each other in prayer, and receive a word that centers us on God’s promises. They’re not just meetings; they’re opportunities for God to recalibrate our hearts, sharpen our focus, and remind us why we do what we do.
This month I shared a message with our staff titled “When You’re Not Feeling Your Calling.” If we’re honest, there are times when every leader feels the weight of their calling–and sometimes, we just don’t feel it at all. But our calling isn’t about how we feel, it’s about yielding to God’s purpose and will. Here are the key takeaways that may help you on your leadership journey:
Your Calling is About Promise, Not Feelings
In Exodus 3:1-12, God called Moses to lead his people out of bondage. Moses filled with insecurity and doubt, asked “How?” but God didn’t respond with a detailed plan. Instead, He said, “I will be with you”. As leaders, we often want clarity in order for us to move, but God reminds us that His presence is enough. Our job isn’t to figure out the “how”; it’s to trust in the “who”.
Watch Out for Joy Stealers in Ministry
In ministry, there are five challenges that can steal our joy:
- Change creates conflict: Growth often comes from discomfort, but it’s essential for transformation. Are we pursuing purpose over position?
- Lack of appreciation drains motivation: Ministry isn’t about credit–it’s about serving people faithfully without seeking recognition.
- The grind makes you weary: Galatians 6:9 reminds us that weariness is a sign we’re doing something good.
- False expectations lead to frustration: Moses only had a burning bush moment once to remind him that he was called. Every day won’t be a burning bush moment; embrace the highs and the lows.
- Failure fuels insecurity: Failure is an event, not an identity. God uses our setbacks for His purpose.
Build Your Support System
Leadership thrives in community. Moses leaned on Aaron, Jethro, and his staff as tools of support. When it comes to building our support system there are a couple of layers we should consider:
Partners: Co-laborers who share your vision.
Mentors: Voices of wisdom who guide us.
People: A team you invest in, because leadership is about empowering others.
Act Like You Believe
Faith isn’t just about feelings it’s about action. We don’t feel our way into obedience; we act our way into faith. By aligning our spirit with God’s truth, we find the strength to persevere through challenges.
Living Out the Call
Every staff meeting at VOUS serves as a reminder that what God starts, He will finish. Through worship, prayer, God’s Word, and the strength of community, we’re renewed and equipped to lead with compassion and purpose.
To every leader and pastor reading this: lean into God’s calling, no matter how you feel. Build a support system, trust His promises, and step out in faith. You’re not alone–God is with you, and He’s equipped you for the mission ahead.
