Sermon Collection: The Theology of Money

Generosity matters deeply to God because it shows where our hearts truly are. Jesus doesn’t need our money; He wants our hearts.

This sermon collection on the theology of money centers around God’s call for us to live generously, rooted in the understanding that He is the ultimate Owner of all. God has entrusted us as stewards, not only of our resources but also of our hearts.

When we view money through His perspective, we break free from the pressures and greed, like the spirit of Mammon, which seeks to control us. Jesus invites us to rely on Him fully, recognizing that money is a tool, not our master. As we give, we align ourselves with God’s abundant generosity—He, who gave us His Son, shows us the life-changing impact of generosity.

Instead of being caught in the world’s cycle of hustle and accumulation, we are called to invest with eternity in mind, using our resources to build His Kingdom. In doing so, we shift from striving for temporary wealth to nurturing an everlasting treasure anchored in trust, purpose, and the provision of King Jesus.

This collection is made up of five messages. Each one anchored on the theme of generosity – God being the “Owner of All” as we steward what He has given us. If you’re considering preaching this collection in your church, read below for a summary of each message and to find the links to the messages on our YouTube Channel.

Why I Give - Pastor Chris Hodges

God has blessed us with the privilege of giving, not just financially but with our lives as a whole. Through our obedience in giving, we unlock opportunities for growth, both spiritually and physically. God’s generosity knows no limits—He gave us His only Son and the gift of life in abundance. Our response to His boundless generosity should reflect a heart of giving in return, mirroring the grace we’ve received.

Generous Grace - Pastor DawnChere Wilkerson

Generosity matters deeply to God because it shows where our hearts truly are. Jesus doesn’t need our money; He wants our hearts, that is why He has given us His clear perspective on generosity. The core of our collection The Theology of Money is the truth that “God is the Owner of All” and we are stewards He has entrusted with resources. As His stewards, entrusted with resources, we’re invited to adopt His view of stewardship. This perspective, guided by the Holy Spirit, shifts our trust from material wealth to the One who sustains us.

Financial Pressure - Pastor Rich Wilkerson Jr.

What does it mean to be “rich”?

The answer varies, but the more we have, the more we want. This desire for more can oftentimes become greed, a spirit that the Bible identifies as Mammon. Jesus’ invitation to the rich young ruler wasn’t only about selling possessions– it was an invitation to break free from the grip of greed. When we view God as the source and money as a mere resource, we find freedom to serve God, making money a tool rather than a master.

The Last Paycheck - Pastor Rich Wilkerson Jr.

Many of us look forward to our next paycheck, sometimes counting down the days till the next one. In our busy world, we easily fall into a cycle of striving for more. Yet, when we put Jesus on the throne of our lives and seek Him first, we don’t have to worry about having “enough”– God will meet our needs. In His Kingdom, there’s an order that replaces striving with peace, giving us what we need to invest in His eternal purposes.

Banking on God - Pastor Rich Wilkerson Jr. -

In the parable of the dishonest manager, Jesus highlights a worldly focus on material wealth. While the dishonest manager was praised for his shrewd planning, his motivation was short-term gain. Unlike the world, which uses money for material goals, the Church is called to plan with eternity in mind. Money isn’t our source–God is. We’re reminded that money is a tool to further God’s Kingdom, not something for us to hold onto tightly in a world that is only temporary.
